Environmental Award

In 2005, Foveran Deer Park was awarded a 'Fish & Game New Zealand Award for Excellence in Riperian Management'.

The award was presented by Fish & Game New Zealand as part of the Deer Industry of New Zealand's environmental awards. Central South Island Fish & Game manager Jay Graybill said the awards were a good opportunity to recognise good work in the farming community.

"When the judging panel visited Foveran Deer Park, it was clear those involved with the property understood the landscape and matching land use with land type," Mr Graybill said.

"Streams had been fenced off with 'generous' margins, which meant there was a good buffer if there was any run-off of fertiliser or faecal material. Some wetland areas has been fenced and rehabilitated also," he said.

Foveran's initiatives were examples of implementing environmental solutions that would have benefits not only for the environment, but also the farming business. The park's owner, Bob Robertson, was committed to envrionmental issues and had a passion for the Hakataramea Valley.

Mr Graybill hoped the awards would provide encouragement and an opportunity and challenge for others to follow.
